Resident Doctors have been challenged on their role as live-savers to be more resourceful in their commitment to saving humanity even in the face of the challenging Nigerian economy.
Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye gave this charge during the Annual General Meeting of Association of Resident Doctors with the theme; ‘’Managing Personnel Resources in a Challenged Economy: ‘’The Role of a Medical Practitioner,’’ held at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.
Doctors according to him should study and juxtapose present economic reality with the impact of external environment on service delivery in Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole and contribute to the innovative thinking that would assist government to improve health care resources.
‘’We need to bring to the consciousness of our colleagues, particularly the Resident Doctors that there are clusters of professionals that are still essential to the delivery of healthcare particularly secondary and tertiary services. We also have to identify the fact that they need to take a particular look at the economic reality and the impact of external environment on service delivery both in Ogun State and Nigeria at large and also be part of innovative thinking that will allow government at all levels to take healthcare resources to another level,’’ Ipaye said.
The Commissioner added that owing to the effects of changes in demand and global competitiveness, medical practitioners should think out of the box, address problems around them, take cognisance of community resources and be creative with available fund allocated to them, adding that challenges should rather spur them on at adopting productivity strategies that would make them self-reliant.
‘’There is nowhere in the world where resources are adequate, challenges must enable you to adopt productivity improvement strategies, so stop depending on ‘’free lunch. Due to the fact that there is change in demand and global competitiveness, you have to think out of the box, you have to take cognisance of community resources, you must take cognisance of how you do your job, the Commissioner submitted,’’
