Interschool Debates: Vital Means For Critical Learning.

Interschool debates have been described as vital means of engaging students in critical learning, which would inturn, boost the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains and improve their academic performances.

The Director of Education Support Services, Ministry of Education, Science and technology, Mr. Martins Akinsolu, who stated this while presenting a paper at a day workshop organised for education stakeholders in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government area of the State, called on public and private schools in the State to adopt world standard in school debate, in order to boost students’ intelligent quotient.

Martins urged students to make reading a regular habit, which would help in broadening their horizons, keeping them well informed and improve their academic performances, advising parents to encourage them at home and ensure proper monitoring of their activities.

Delivering another paper at the workshop, Dr. (Mrs.) Elemile from Ace Medicare Clinics, has attributed causes of sudden death in Nigeria to the breakdown of the central nervous system, such as strokes, respiratory system, cardiovascular system amongst others.

She revealed that between 300, 000 to 350,000 people die of cardiac related ailments annually in the United States, adding that cardiac death accounts for majority of sudden death in Nigeria.

The medical practitioner opined that sudden death could be averted through lifestyle modification, periodic medical check and avoiding self medication, amongst others.
